Probe into schoolgirl who drank beer in Kekirawa

The Kekirawa Police said that a 14-year-old schoolgirl who came to school after consuming beer was admitted to the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital.

Recently, two officers of the Kekirawa police, who were on traffic duty on the main road in front of a school in the Kekirawa education zone, took this student who had come to the school after drinking beer into their custody.

Later, the student was brought to Kekirawa Police Station by OIC Chief Inspector Sumith Munasinghe and was admitted to the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital.In the preliminary investigation to find out how this student drank alcohol, it has now been revealed that the father of the girl’s mother’s second marriage husband, (grandfather) had taught her to drink beer.

Kekirawa Police have had informed the Probation Office of the Kekirawa Magistrate’s Court and accordingly, Senior Probation Officer Karuna Keerthiratne has held a separate investigation.

According to the said investigation, when the senior probation officer made a call for a statement from the principal of the school where the concerned student is studying, the principal hung up the phone and refused to support the investigations.

Later, Senior Probation Officer Karuna Keerthiratne complained to the Kekirawa Regional Education Director that the principal of the school is obstructing the investigation.

The Kekirawa Police said they have started a comprehensive investigation to find out the reason why this girl came to school after drinking beer and who taught her to drink beer.

Police further stated that they have already recorded statements from several teachersin the school where the girl is studying.

On the instructions of Chief Inspector Sumith Munasinghe, OIC of Kekirawa Police, the Children’s and Women’s Office of the police station is conducting further investigations into the incident.
