The Peradeniya Police have commenced investigations regarding a notification that the Peradeniya University’s Arts Faculty Dean Prof. Prabhath Ekanayake, had received a phone call claiming to be from a Deputy Inspector General of Police telling him to come to the Police Headquarters to obtain a statement and stated that if he did not come, he would be arrested. The person posing as a Deputy Inspector General of Police had informed Dean Ekanayake to come to Colombo to btain a statement, as information had been received that the students of the University of Peradeniya were going to hold a protest in Colombo, against the professor who is alleged to have scolded and threatened students of the University of Peradeniya and said that if he did not come, he would be arrested. On August 20, five calls had been received between 11.00 am and 11.46 am from the number related, to the Dean’s phone. Since he had been unable to answer those calls, the professor had made a call to that number at around 12.35 pm in the afternoon. The professor had made a complaint to the police and stated that a person claiming to be DIG Chandrakumara had called him at that time and told him to come to police headquarters on 21 August to obtain a statement. As soon as he received this call, Professor Prabhath Ekanayake had taken steps to inform theSenior Deputy Inspector General of Central Province about it. The Senior DIG had informed that the relevant number is not used by a DIG.
At around 12.00 noon on the same day, the same person had called the Peradeniya Police saying that he is DIG Chandrakumara. He had asked the female police constable who had taken the call at the time for the professor’s phone number, saying that it was necessary for an investigation.
The President of the University of Peradeniya Students’ Union had recently filed a complaint with the Peradeniya Police that the Dean had threatened and scolded him.
The dean had requested in his complaint to conduct an investigation regarding this phone call, as the president and students loyal to him are angry with each other due to this incident.
