Investigations following the arrest of former Colombo Municipal Councillor Mahinda Kahandagama have uncovered information indicating that he had allegedly maintained close associations with several Sri Lankan organized drug traffickers overseas, including individuals operating from Dubai.
Kahandagama, a former councillor representing the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), was arrested by the Central Crime Investigation Bureau this morning (06) following an investigation launched on information that he was allegedly involved in trafficking ICE narcotics. A quantity of the drug was also allegedly recovered from his possession.
During subsequent investigations, officers reportedly uncovered footage showing Kahandagama in Dubai attending a party with individuals allegedly linked to organized drug trafficking.
According to investigators, the footage shows Kahandagama closely associating with Chathura Dilrukshan, identified as the brother of the criminal known as ‘Modara Nipuna’, as well as the alleged drug trafficker known as ‘Keselwatte Dinusha’.
Investigators have also observed that those present at the gathering are heard addressing Kahandagama as “Dada.”
Further investigations have allegedly uncovered links between Kahandagama and the drug trafficker known as ‘Ibbagewatte Sujee’, with investigators also obtaining details of telephone conversations between the two.
It has further been alleged that Kahandagama had obtained ICE from ‘Ibbagewatte Sujee’ and later received death threats after failing to make payment for the drugs.
Meanwhile, acting on information obtained following Kahandagama’s arrest, investigators conducted another raid in Nugegoda and arrested a second suspect allegedly connected to the same drug network.
Police reportedly recovered 1,100 milligrams of Ice from the second suspect.
Both suspects have been taken to the Central Crime Investigation Bureau in Narahenpita for further questioning and are due to be produced before the Maligakanda Magistrate’s Court today (06), where investigators are expected to seek detention orders. (Newswire)
