Probing whether the railway strike was an act of sabotage – Railways AGM
No long distance trains were Cancelled
Only some short services were disrupted
Additional General Manager of Railways P. S. Polwattage said that the railway strike launched by the Secretary of the Locomotive Operating Engineers Union was unsuccessful and an investigation was on to determine whether it was a sabotage action.
Polwattage also said that the issue of promotion from the Grade 3 to Grade 2, which caused the strike of the Locomotive drivers, has now been resolved.
“Eleven letters related to Grade 2 promotions have been sent to the employees yesterday morning, 57 have been promoted to Grade 2 so far.
Another 11 will get their letters today. Also, 10 relevant employees awaiting promotion to Grade 2 did not qualify due to deficiencies in the files,” he said.
Polwattage said that the chairman of the locomotive operating engineers union was not happy about the strike called by the secretary of the union.
He further said that steps are being taken to fill the necessary vacancies for all services from the retired employees and that it has been formally referred to the Public Service Commission for approval.
He said that the employees who received the approval are already providing services and that the commission has given permission to get services from the retired employees subject to the approval and so far about 40 employees have been employed.
