
The Professor G.L. Peiris Trust for Legal Education and Research has been established to support legal education, research and academic activities in Sri Lanka.
The Trust was formally established at a ceremony held at the Senate House of the University of Colombo this week, attended by senior academics, members of the legal profession and representatives of civil society.
The Trust Deed, prepared by Paul Ratnayeke Associates, was signed by Professor G.L. Peiris as settlor.
The trustees are University of Colombo Vice Chancellor Professor Mahesh Indika Karunatilaka, Faculty of Law Dean Professor Sampath Punchihewa, Sri Lanka Law College Principal Prasantha Lal de Alwis, President’s Counsel, and Dr. Amanthi Bandusena, Professor Peiris’ daughter.
The Trust will receive royalties due to Professor Peiris from 10 books he has written on Sri Lankan laws and legal systems. Professor Peiris also contributed Rs. 1 million from his personal funds to establish the Trust Fund.
Under the arrangement, the trustees will be able to allocate resources to the University of Colombo’s Faculty of Law and the Sri Lanka Law College based on their needs and priorities.
The funds are expected to support activities including legal research, symposia on contemporary issues, memorial lectures, moot courts and debating competitions.
At the ceremony, Professor Punchihewa also announced that the Faculty of Law had decided to establish the Professor G.L. Peiris Gold Medal for Criminal Law in recognition of his contribution to legal scholarship.
Former University of Colombo Vice Chancellor and Emeritus Professor Savitri Goonesekera delivered the guest address, reflecting on her work with Professor Peiris and the challenges faced in developing the university.
Professor Peiris, a former Vice Chancellor and Dean of the Faculty of Law, spoke about efforts to maintain academic standards while significantly increasing student intake from across the country.
The ceremony was attended by several President’s Counsel, academics, Law College officials and representatives of Paul Ratnayeke Associates and Lake House Investments. (Newswire)
