Promotion of cannabis spells doom for country – Sajith
Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa yesterday asked Parliament whether the government is giving permission to promote the use of cannabis, which is presently categorised as a dangerous drug.
Research reports also state that the majority of those who have become addicted to dangerous drugs use cannabis as an initial substance. Therefore, he asked whether the government is willing to grant the necessary legal permission for the consumption and transportation of cannabis for the sake of recreational use.
The Leader of the Opposition mentioned this while raising a question under Standing Orders 27/2. How the government ensures that more people will not become addicted to dangerous drugs if cannabis is further promoted, which has been included in the list of dangerous drugs in many countries of the world.
Does the Government have a specific programme to prevent this situation? Is the Government willing to grant the necessary legal permission for consumption and transporting cannabis for recreational purposes? Is the Government trying to recover this bankrupt country by promoting the cannabis business? The Government should immediately stop the program of selling tobacco, cigarettes and alcohol. I also make a request to the Government to stop distributing beer licenses to various persons through MPs. A village, a city and a country will not be developed from them. Only alcohol companies and tobacco companies are benefitted from them.
