Public sector salaries to be increased next year
Cabinet Spokesman Minister Vijitha Herath said that government employees will be given a salary increase from next year.
The Minister stated this at the Cabinet press conference held at the Government Information Department yesterday (29).
The Minister also pointed out that the salary increase will be decided after reviewing the financial situation. He stated that the previous government had not allocated any funds to increase the salaries of the public sector. Commenting further, the Minister said, “We would very much like to give salary increases and allowances to public servants and private sector workers.
There is no hesitation in that regard. But those decisions have to be made according to the funds available in the Treasury. The former President, as the finance minister, had submitted proposals to the Cabinet and made a decision to increase salaries. But it was not thought whether the Treasury would have the funds to increase the wages. What he did was wrong.”
“I make it very clear that according to the committee report of Udaya R. Seneviratne, funds have not been allocated for salary increase. There is no observation whether there is money in the Treasury or not.
“We will never cheat the public servants of this country. From 2025, we will increase the salaries of public servants. That guarantee is given to you. But it is difficult to say how much,” the Minister said.
