Veteran rally driver Pubudu Wickrama, partnered by his daughter Ashvitha, triumphed in the Maxxis Midnight Challenge, a joint effort of the Sri Lanka Association of Racing Drivers and Riders and the Ceylon Motor Sports Club. The rally featured an innovative regularity format utilizing virtual marshalling technology.

Wickrama claimed victory not only in the overall standings but also in the SUV, Trucks, and Jeeps category, amassing just 16 minutes and 37 seconds in time penalties. Their precise navigation and skillful driving dominated the challenging course.

Commencing in Sri Jayawardenepura, Kotte, the rally featured 28 drivers across categories like SUVs, Trucks, Jeeps, and Cars. Covering 150km, drivers paused in Ingiriya before finishing in Kotte.

Ishraq Wahab secured second place with a time penalty of approximately 4 minutes. Deepthi Perera and co-driver Pawan De Silva finished third in this event, sponsored by Maxxis Tires and Rakna Lanka Restaurant.

The regularity rally format required adherence to time schedules, monitored via GPS/mobile applications. Wickrama praised the approach, highlighting his daughter’s exceptional navigation.

The new format streamlined efficiency while posing reliability challenges for participants’ devices. Awards recognized excellence and Soraya Wahab, part of Ishraq Wahab’s crew, was rewarded as the youngest member.
