Ranindu Dilshan secures second runner-up position

International Master Ranindu Dilshan Liyanage clinched the second runner-up position in the Western Asian Junior Blitz Chess Championship. The event, organized by the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka in collaboration with the Asian Chess Federation and World Chess Federation, concluded at the Board of Investment (BOI) Auditorium at the World Trade Centre on December 5.

The championship witnessed intense competition, with International Master VR Rahul from India emerging as the undisputed champion in three-minute plus two-second increment duels. Raahul secured a perfect score of 7/7 points, leaving no room for rivals.

In the runner-up positions, FIDE Master Reja Manon of Bangladesh claimed the first spot with a superior tie-break, while Ranindu Dilshan secured the second runner-up place. The event drew participants from seven countries, including Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, India, Maldives, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Turkmenistan.

In the women’s category, Zeinep Sultanbek of Kazakhstan showcased her prowess, seizing the championship with an impressive score of 6.5/7 points. Women FIDE Master Lala Shohradova of Turkmenistan claimed the first runner-up position with a score of 6/7, and Women FIDE Master Patil Bhagyashree of India secured the second runner-up spot with 5.5/7 points.

Both championships featured a fast-paced format with a three-minute plus two-second increment from move one control. The seven-round Swiss format added intensity to the competition, highlighting the strategic brilliance of participants from diverse countries.

The Western Asian Junior Blitz Chess Championship was a testament to the growing prowess of chess players across the region, providing a platform for engaging battles of wits and fostering camaraderie among participants.
