Ranmini Sanjana, a hockey star in the making

Fifth year player Kalugamage Ranmini Sanjana Fernando from Holy Family Convent Wennappuwa has brought honour and glory to her alma mater in the field of Hockey. She is playing in the center forward position and a member of the District and Provincial teams. She is a member of the All Island Champion team in 2022 and a member of the women’s Junior Asia Cup tour of Singapore and Schools hockey Nationals champion team in 2022.

Ranmini was born on 15th March 2003 and admitted to her present school in 2009 and when she was in grade six her Parents Ruwan Femando and Swama Femando handed over their daughter to school hockey officials Mrs. Kumari, Mrs. Priyangani and Milan Boteju. In 2015 she participated in the All Island under 13 team and in the following year her team became under 13

runner-up. In the same year her team became the champions of the Puttalam District Festival Open Meet and in 2017 too they were the champions. In the same year they participated in the under 18 All Island tournament, Royal Sevens and Visakha Sevens Meets where they became second runner up.

In 2018 her school became the under 16 All Island runner-up and Ranmini was adjudged the Best Player of the tournament and in 2018 under 18 tournament they were the runner-up. They also became the runner-up in under-20 All Island tourney.

2019 was a tight schedule for Ranmini with eight major tournaments commencing from under 20 All Island which they came third. In the under 21 Junior Nationals they emerged champions and she was adjudged the Best Player of the tournament. Her school team had the privilege of playing with an Australian visiting team. In the under 20 National tournament they won the third place. They were the winners of District Festival Open Tournament and also clinched the under-18 All Island title. Ranmini was selected for the Women’s Junior Asia Cup under 21 team for the tour of Singapore which was a fine exposure for her.

Then in 2022 at the Schools National Tournament they reached up-to semi finals and in the All Island 2022 National Schools Hockey Tournament they became the champions beating combined schools team.
