Ratnapura Principal remanded over sexual abuse of students
The National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) has arrested the principal of a leading boys’ school in Ratnapura on charges of sexually abusing students.
He was remanded by the Ratnapura Magistrate’s courts yesterday.
A special investigation was conducted based on information received by the National Child Protection Authority about child sexual abuse that has been going on for some time in this boys’ school in Ratnapura. It has been revealed with concrete evidence that this principal has been taking students to his quarters for a long time and sexually abusing the children by giving them monetary rewards and various privileges.
After a lengthy investigation, the suspect who was arrested yesterday was produced before the Ratnapura Magistrate’s Court and remanded under the charge of serious sexual abuse under Section 365 (b) of the Penal Code.
National Child Protection Authority Chairman Udayakumara Amarasinghe said education authorities, principals and the entire teaching staff should be responsible for the protection of schoolchildren.
He requested the public to inform the 1929 Child Helpline Number of the National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) immediately about complaints and information about any incidents of child abuse occurring in the country. The NCPA has conducted investigations related to this incident.
