Country’s top-ranked squash player, Ravindu Laksiri, secured his 11th Senior National Squash title in a thrilling showdown at the 43rd Sri Lanka Senior National Squash Championship which concluded at Sri Lanka Air Force Squash Complex yesterday.
Laksiri dominated the Men’s Open championship, defeating Shamil Wakeel with a convincing 3-0 victory, with the scoreline reading 12-10, 11-3, 14-12. This remarkable achievement by Laksiri marks a historic record in Sri Lankan squash.
Meanwhile, Yeheni Kuruppu emerged as the surprise winner in the Women’s Open championship by defeating the reigning national champion, Chanithma Sinaly, in a hard-fought five-setter final.
Kuruppu claimed her first Senior National title with a 3-2 win, and the intense match unfolded with scores of 11-6, 9-11, 8-11, 12-10, and 11-7 in favor of Kuruppu. This upset marked the end of Chanithma Sinaly’s reign as the national champion.
In the battle for third place in the Men’s Open category, Nevindu Lakman of DS Senanayake College emerged victorious by defeating Shariff Hakeem. On the women’s side, Dewmini Gallage of the Informatic Institute of Technology secured the third place.
