Sri Lanka’s top-notch squash player, Ravindu Laksiri, displayed his remarkable prowess on the court by securing his second consecutive PSA Satellite Title in Australia. Laksiri achieved this feat by defeating South Korea’s leading squash player, Jaejin Yoo, with a resounding 3-1 victory in the final match of the Devonport Open 2023 men’s Satellite PSA tournament held in Tasmania on Monday.

The match’s scoreboard revealed a scoreline of 5-11, 11-4, 11-2, and 11-9, firmly favoring Laksiri. With this notable triumph, Laksiri’s global ranking skyrocketed to 121, a monumental accomplishment that has never before been achieved by a Sri Lankan in the annals of squash history within the country.

Laksiri shared his elation, stating, “Though I have encountered Korean opponents in previous contests like the Asian Senior Championships, this win carries a special significance. Just two months ago, I faced the Korean number three player and was unable to clinch victory. Thus, it brings me immense pleasure to emerge victorious against the top-ranked Korean player, securing a 3-1 win.”

The semi-finals witnessed Laksiri’s prowess as he battled Egyptian contender Mohammed Gohar, prevailing with a scoreline of 8-11, 11-8, 11-8, and 12-10.

During the quarter-finals, Ravindu Laksiri displayed unyielding dominance against Australian competitor Bendon Macdonald, sweeping the contest with a decisive score of 11-3, 11-0, and 11-5.

A participant within a 32-player draw, Laksiri earned a bye in the initial round, propelling him directly to the second round. His duel in the second round against Australian Benjamin Ratcliffe culminated in a 3-0 victory, reflected in the scores of 11-7, 11-4, and 13-11. Remarkably, in a prior Satellite tournament this tour in Australia, Laksiri had previously triumphed over Ratcliffe with a score of 3-2. In this instance, Laksiri’s performance showcased his prowess by securing a three-set victory.

Prior to this victory, Laksiri had clinched the Foundation Wealth Advisers Open 2023 Title, all of two tournaments which fall under the purview of the World Squash Federation (WSF) and Satellite Tournaments.

Throughout his tour, Laksiri contested three PSA Challenger Tour 3 tournaments and one PSA Challenger Tour 5 tournament, culminating in two WSF & PSA Satellite tournaments. Altogether, the seasoned player engaged in six PSA tournaments, securing championship titles in three, advancing as a semi-finalist and quarter-finalist in two others, and attaining the last 16 in one tournament.

The Devonport Open 2023 marked the culmination of Laksiri’s tour, which lasted his stay of one month and twenty days in Australia.
