Ravindu wins squash title in Australia
Ravindu Laksiri, the reigning Open Squash Champion of Sri Lanka, clinched the championship title at the Foundation Wealth Advisers PSA Satellite Open Tournament held in Hobart, Australia yesterday.
Laksiri secured a commanding victory over Australia’s Nicholas Calvert in the final match, defeating him with a clean sweep of 3-0 sets. The scoreline of the championship match was recorded as 11-3, 11-4, and 11-7.
In the Semi-final, he faced Japan’s Naoki Hayashi, and the match proved to be a hard-fought battle. In the end, Laksiri emerged triumphant with a close score of 3-2, securing his spot in the final. In the Quarter-final, he encountered Hong Kong’s formidable Wailok TO. This match carried added significance, given that Laksiri had faced defeat at the hands of TO in the same tournament last year.
However, Laksiri turned the tables this time around, delivering an impressive 3-0 victory over his rival. Seeded as the number one ranked player in the tournament, Laksiri received a bye in the first round, providing him with a direct entry to the Round of 16.
In his second-round match, he faced Korea’s Kang Hayeon Beom, who proved to be a challenging opponent. Nonetheless, Laksiri showcased his resilience and determination, emerging victorious with a score of 3-2.
Meanwhile, Sri Lanka’s Junior National Champion, Nevindu Lakman, who recently completed the World Junior Championships, also made his mark in the same tournament by becoming the Plate runner-up.
