RCGC to mark centenary with a grand golf tourney

The oldest club in the country and the second oldest Royal Club outside UK, Royal Colombo Golf Club (RCGC) is celebrating a historic landmark, the 100th Club Championship 2021 which will be held at their Golf Course in Colombo from November 20 to 28. Luxury watch brand TAG Heuer has partnered with the RCGC to host the clubs 100th Championship Tournament this year.

This event will see the participation of 150 female and 130 male best golfers in the country. The 100th Club Championship promises some exciting golf by the defending champion Yannik Kumara, who will no doubt be challenged by past winners Rusi Captain, Sachin De Silva, Amrith De Soyza, Mangala Niyarepola followed by a strong field that includes Ranil Peiris, Kushal Johnpillai, Nirekh Tejwani, Rajeeve Rajapakse, Noordeen Sethwala, W. A. K. Fernando, Chanaka Perera, Sanjeev Vairavanathan, Shamal Perera and many other talented golfers of the RCGC at this landmark occasion of the 100th Club Championship on the immaculately manicured fairways and pristine greens of the Royal Colombo Golf Club in the days to come.

The defending Lady Club Champion and golfing prodigy Kayla Perera too will have her work cut out in defending her title against up and coming golfing star young Kaya Daluwatte, veteran lady golfers Anouk Chitty, Niloo Jayathilleke, Praveena Dunuville, Usha De Silva, Anusha Senadheera, Ruwani Desinghe and a strong field of lady golfers in the fray to win this championship on this landmark occasion of the RCGC.

Mention must be made here of some fantastic achievements by past members of the RCGC. In the gentlemen golfers category, the late Pin Fernando has won this championship for a record 19 times, whereas current playing member Rusi Captain comes a close second with 14 wins of this championship, perhaps the closest in contention to break this record.

In the Ladies category current Lady Captain, Anouk Chitty has won this for a record eight instances to date. The current most senior members of the gentlemens and ladies categories to have won this championship in the past are Sohli Captain, Major General (Retired) Dr. Chelliah Thurairaja and Yvonne Abhayaratne respectively.

Amrith De Soyza is known for his outstanding achievement at the tender age of 14 years and six months in 2001, to be the youngest member ever to win the championship in its history to date.

The much sought after championship, instituted in 1914, where R.J. Elliot emerged as the very first Club Champion, is scheduled to tee off on November 20th (Saturday) and will be played in the format of two qualifier rounds on gross score, where the top 16 golfers with the best gross score then move on to a sudden death match play format, consisting of a pre-quarters, quarterfinals, semi-finals, and a gruelling 36-hole final scheduled to be played on Sunday the 28th during the morning and afternoon sessions.

Speaking about the partnership with RCGC, CEO of Colombo Jewelery Stores, Akram Cassim stated TAG Heuer was one of the very first global luxury watch brands to establish a strong visible presence here in Sri Lanka. . The partnership with RCGC marks yet another evolutionary turn for TAG Heuer in Sri Lanka, as it ventures into the sphere of elite sport with the backing of global principles.

Jehaan Ismail, Captain of RCGC said that they are delighted to celebrate a Century of Golf this year. The 100th Club Championship is a remarkable milestone for the club. Golf over a centenary ago was a niche sport, but today is becoming a very inclusive sport with the sports etiquette, traditions, and rules very much intact. It has gradually become a sport played at various socio economic levels in Sri Lanka and promises to produce some world class golfers in the near future. Over a century of Golf at the RCGC the championship has produced legends and noteworthy ambassadors for the game, and it is with that spirit that we celebrate our 100th RCGC Club Championship.
