Re-establishing public trust in politicians, political institutions vital – President
President Anura Kumara Dissanayake emphasised the importance of re-establishing public trust in politicians and political institutions, stating that public trust in the National People’s Power has grown substantially since the Presidential Election victory.
“Our responsibility as the NPP is to lead the country forward with the trust you have placed in us,” he declared addressing a public rally in Godakawela in support of NPP candidates contesting for the Parliamentary Election from the Ratnapura district recently.
“If a country is governed by corrupt individuals, thugs, and criminals, it faces nothing but disaster,” emphasised the President and Leader of the National People’s Power (NPP).
Highlighting NPP’s vision, President Dissanayake said, “During the Presidential Election, we promised to dissolve Parliament within days of our victory, and we kept that promise. Governing a country requires both a strong Presidency and a robust Parliament. We anticipate conducting the Provincial Council elections within the upcoming year, followed by the Local Government elections. Building a stable political structure for these institutions is essential for uplifting the lives of the people suffering from hardships.”
He also expressed that while the NPP now holds the Presidency, Parliament must be strengthened next. “To begin a journey of good governance, Parliament must be cleansed. The public perception of representatives in our Parliament, Provincial Councils, and Local Government bodies is not favourable. When one hears the term ‘Minister,’ it conjures images of corruption, thuggery, or criminality. If political leadership consists of criminals, thugs, and corrupt individuals, such a nation is bound for ruin,” he stated.
He also emphasised the need for committed political leadership to overcome challenges in various sectors. “Close and capable leadership is necessary to uplift sectors like agriculture. We need a stable administration backed by a robust Parliament to plan and steer these sectors effectively,” he explained, urging voters in Ratnapura to support the NPP’s vision.
Addressing recent events, he noted the no-confidence motions brought against the former Finance and Health Ministers, with the majority of Parliamentarians voting to protect these corrupt officials. “The people’s trust in Parliament has eroded as representatives protect the corrupt instead of the public,” he said. He called on the public to elect individuals committed to rebuilding the nation and representing the true interests of the people. “If we want the best Parliament this country has ever seen, fill it with representatives of the NPP.”
President Dissanayake concluded by emphasising the need for disciplined, law-abiding individuals willing to dedicate their time, effort, and resources to rebuild the country.
