Record 5,000-vehicle BYD shipment arrives in Australia as EV demand surges

The largest-ever shipment of electric vehicles to Australia has arrived in Melbourne, with 5,000 vehicles delivered aboard a BYD car carrier from China amid continued growth in demand for electric cars.
The purpose-built vessel, BYD Zhengzhou, docked in Melbourne after sailing directly from Shanghai, marking the biggest single delivery of electric vehicles to Australia.
The arrival comes as new data shows strong consumer interest in EVs despite global economic uncertainty and ongoing tensions in the Middle East.
According to the National Roads and Motorists’ Association (NRMA), insurance quote requests for electric vehicles have increased by 95% this year and are up 60% compared to the same period last year.
Data from vehicle auction company Pickles also showed buyer demand remains about 46% higher than levels recorded before the outbreak of the Iran conflict, while vehicle clearance rates have remained around 70%.
BYD Australia Chief Operating Officer Stephen Collins said most vehicles in the latest shipment had already been sold.
“Most of these cars were sold 10 to 12 weeks ago, so I think that’s a record turnaround for any car company,” Collins said.
BYD is now Australia’s second most popular new vehicle brand behind Toyota, with electric vehicles accounting for approximately one in every six new vehicles sold in the country. (Newswire)
