Agriculture Minister Mahinda Amaraweera has proposed to give a compensation of Rs.250,000 per hectare to the farmers whose crop was damaged in the last Yala Season due to drought.

In the 2023 yala season, about 58,770 acres of paddy and other crops were damaged due to the inability to provide sufficient water, and as a result, about 54,000 farmers have been affected. Minister of Agriculture Mahinda Amaraweera presented a proposal to the Cabinet regarding compensating the affected farmers.

Taking this proposal into consideration, the Cabinet decided on October 9 to allocate necessary provisions to compensate the farmers under the crop insurance scheme which is currently in operation despite the extremely difficult financial situation the government is facing.

The Agriculture Minister pointed out that previously the government had paid Rs.40,000 per acre in compensation to the farmers for crop damage and the highest amount of compensation in history would be paid this time.
