The red alert issued for possible floods in the lowlands around Attanagalu Oya has been extended for the next 48 hours, the Irrigation Department said yesterday. The Department further stated that the current flood situation in the Attanagalu Oya basin is gradually increasing in the lower areas. Accordingly, the Department requests that the people in the low-lying areas in the Gampaha, Ja-Ela, Katana, Wattala and Minuwangoda Divisional Secretariats should act with utmost care in this regard. Also, vehicular traffic around those areas are requested to be careful.
The upper reaches of the Kuda Ganga sub-basin of the Kalu Ganga have received significant rainfall and are continuing to receive rain. The Irrigation Department said that in the next 48 hours (i.e. from Tuesday evening), the lowlands belonging to the Kuda Ganga and Magura Ganga areas in the Divisional Secretariat Divisions of Bulathsinhala, Madurawala and Palindanuwara should be on alert for minor flooding.
