The Government should focus attention towards reducing prices of essential commodities such as rice, sugar, dhal, dried fish, lentils, milk powder and gas, Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa said. Premadasa asked why authorities have not yet taken action to stop the price increase of sugar in the open market since sugar is considered as a vital commodity of all people.
He said authorities should also reveal how the price of sugar instantly went up from Rs. 160 to Rs. 210.
Referring to the recently allocated Rs.2,000 by the Government for daily wage earners who lost their income due to the existing quarantine curfew, the Opposition Leader said no one can survive with this amount as the prices of essential items are escalating. He also expressed concern over the untimely deaths of people in the country due to the increasing COVID pandemic and said more PCR and Antigen tests should be done on people not only in urban areas but also in rural areas also as it is the only solution to contain the virus from spreading.
