Remains of former Speaker in Parliament today
The remains of the late former Speaker Joseph Michael Perera will be brought to Parliament at 9 am today.
The remains of late Perera, a former Speaker of the Parliament of Sri Lanka and Cabinet Minister, will be brought to the Parliament complex today (30) at 9 a.m. to pay respects, the Secretary General of the Parliament Dhammika Dasanayake said.
Accordingly, all relevant parties, including the arrival of MPs are expected at 8.45 am. The hearse carrying the remains of Joseph Michael Perera is scheduled to arrive near the main steps of the Parliament complex by 9 a.m. Thereafter,Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardana, Prime Minister, Dinesh Gunawardena, Deputy Speaker Ajith Rajapakse, Deputy Chairperson of Committees, Angajan Ramanathan, Party Leaders, Secretary General of Parliament Dhammika Dasanayake,Chief of Staff and Deputy Secretary General of Parliament Kushani Rohanadeera, will receive the remains ofthe late former Speaker.
The Serjeant-at-Arms, Deputy Serjeant-at-Arms and Assistant Sergeant-at-Arms will then escort the remains kept at the special ceremonial hall located in the front hall of the Parliament building.
The remains of the late Joseph Michael Perera will be placed from 9 a.m to 10 a.m, the Secretary General said.
President Ranil Wickremesinghe is also scheduled to pay his last respects in Parliament. The Secretary General informs all Members of Parliament, former Members of Parliament,
Ambassadors as well as the staff of the Secretariat of Parliament, former members of staff and staff affiliated to the Parliament to pay their last respects to late Joseph Michael Perera.
Born on September 15, 1941, Joseph Michael Perera served as the Seventeenth Speaker from December 19,2001 to February 7, 2004.
