“Removal of PUCSL Chairman a problem of governance structure”
MP Professor Charitha Herath stated in Parliament yesterday that the existing problem of removing the Chairman of the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanaka (PUCSL) is not a problem related to the removal of individuals but a problem related to the structure.
He also said that a system should be prepared regarding the procedure for removing a Chairman of an independent commission.
Prof Herath said this while joining the debate on the removal of the Chairman of the Public Utilities Commission.
He said that this raises a structural problem in the Sri Lankan Parliament in the case of removing the chairman and although this structural problem can be closed by pointing out the majority of 113, it highlights the existing problem of the democratic model in this country.
He further added that there is a bridge between the Legislature and the Executive and the Legislature includes the finance minister and other ministers and it is part of the Executive.
He said that if necessary, the Executive can say that there is a problem with this chairman and even if the Executive wants to remove this chairman, he will be removed if he is removed together with the Legislature.
