Super League Soccer Tournament:
Mohamed Aman Faizer of Renown makes a move against Mohamed Ali Hassan of Red Star.

Renown created a major upset by defeating Red Star 3 goals to 1 in the inter-club soccer fixture played for the ‘Super League’ championship at Race Course grounds yesterday.

Renown who are placed seventh in the points table at the end of the sixth week, put up a belligerent performance to overcome their fourth-placed rivals, and also halt their unbeaten run. The tournament is now wide open and will be more interesting in the coming weeks.

After a 4-all draw against New Young last week, Renown showed some tremendous improvement in this game and was a much-determined lot to win this game. Eventually, they made the initial scoring of the match in the 16th minute of the first half when skipper and striker Dilip Suraj Peiris booted a spectacular goal. Nineteen minutes later due to a defense lapse Red Star skipper Mohamed Rahuman equalised to make the scoreline 1-all, which remained unchanged at the breather.

It was a tough encounter between the two sides for supremacy after the turnaround, as both teams made valiant efforts to increase their lead. The much expected and relatively experienced Red Star had a poor day on the field and played in patches rather than executing a proper plan, which made them pay the penalty, as their rivals ran through their defense to score two more goals. Faizer Mohamed Amman was first to score in the 55th minute, while Mohamed Mujeeb put the final nail on the coffin in the second extra minute after full time to notch up a memorable victory.

Red Stars Mohamed Rahuman heads the individual goal tally with seven goals.

Lakmal Weerakkody controlled the game.
