Agriculture, Livestock, Lands, and Irrigation Ministry Secretary D. P. Wickramasinghe directed reservoir engineers and technical officers attached to the Irrigation Department and the Mahaweli Authority to remain at their respective stations to provide necessary assistance to the public amidst the prevailing emergency disaster situation.
This directive follows instructions from Agriculture, Livestock, Lands, and Irrigation Minister K.D. Lal Kantha.
As per these guidelines, the Secretary said that any officers currently on leave are required to cancel their leave with immediate effect.
Under the Minister’s guidance, a special committee led by the Secretary and comprising the Directors General of Irrigation, Mahaweli, and Agriculture has been tasked with continuously monitoring and reviewing the disaster situation.
Furthermore, the Minister has instructed officials of the Mahaweli Authority to extend their support to Divisional Secretaries in providing relief to affected populations in their respective areas.
The Secretary added that engineers and technical officers of the Irrigation Department and Mahaweli Authority are instructed to alert communities residing near reservoirs currently overflowing, such as Parakrama Samudraya and Rajanganaya, to take necessary precautions.
Officials from these institutions have also been directed to implement immediate safety measures for communities affected by heavy rainfall in low-lying areas such as the Akkaraipattu and Nilwala River basins. Additionally, they are tasked with identifying vulnerable areas at risk of further damage due to the ongoing adverse weather and ensuring the provision of essential services.
