The Court of Appeal yesterday (28) granted former Minister Rishad Bathiudeen time to file his objections regarding

a petition filed against him for Contempt of Court by not implementing an order given by the Court of Appeal to replant forests at Maraichchukkaddy and Karadikkuli near the Wilpattu Forest Reserve. President’s Counsel Faiz Mustapha, who represented the former Minister asked for time to file objections related to this petition and accordingly, the Court of Appeal ordered to file the relevant objections before July 21.

The petition was considered by Court of Appeal President Nishanka Bandula Karunaratne and Justice M.A.R.Marikkar.

The respondent former minister Rishad Badiuddin also appeared before court. The petition was scheduled to be called on August 28.

The Center for Environmental Justice filed a writ petition in the Appellate Court against the illegal clearing of Maraichchukkaddy and Karadikkuli forests in the Wilpattu Forest Reserve.

On November 16, 2020, the Court of Appeal ordered the respondent, Rishad Badiuddin, the former minister, to take steps to replant the forest in the exposed forest area.

Challenging the relevant order, Badiudeen submitted a petition to the Supreme Court and the court stated that the petition is not a hindrance to replanting forest.

The present petition has been filed requesting to rule out that Badiudeen has insulted the court by not following the order and punish him.
