Rising heat beware!

The Department of Meteorology has issued a warning about hot weather conditions for nine districts with the heat index that could increase up to 39-45 ‘Caution’ level today (28). Based on the Heat Index Advisory issued by the Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre, the heat felt by the human body at some places in the North-Western, Western and Southern provinces and Ratnapura District is expected to increase to a ‘Caution’ level where fatigue is possible with prolonged exposure and activity and continued activity could result in heat strokes that require special attention.

The Meteorological Department advised that people should drink adequate water to stay hydrated, take breaks and stay as much as possible in the shaded areas of open work sites and limit strenuous outdoor activities.

Attention should be paid especially to the elderly and sick people living inside homes and also to ensure not to keep small children alone inside closed vehicles.

The Meteorological Department also advised to wear light weight, white or light coloured clothing as much as possible.
