0 1

Transport, Highways and Mass Media Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardhana said yesterday that if incidents of assaults and harassment on Sri Lanka Transport Bus (SLTB) bus crews by private bus crew are reported, steps will be taken to temporarily cancel the route permits of those private buses.

“We all should get together to defeat this terrorism on the road aimed at the SLTB,” he added.

The Minister made these remarks after speaking to SLTB employees who are engaged in a protest in front of the Mass Media Ministry against the frequent attacks on SLTB bus drivers and conductors by the employees of the private buses. The Minister who arrived at the site discussed with the protesting workers and inquired about their problems.

The Minister also urged the representatives of trade unions to perform their duties promptly without resorting to strike action, allowing the investigations to be carried out in a proper manner by the Police. He informed the trade union officials that he is ready as the Minister in charge to discuss any problem whenever necessary.

The Minister said that he will not allow private buses to enter Central Bus Stand in Pettah at all  due to frequent attacks on SLTB crew and damage caused to government property, even though a request has been made to allow private buses to enter the CBS in order to implement the combined timetable system that is expected to be implemented in the future.

“But, steps will be taken to implement a joint time table as scheduled. The Minister announced that a special programme will be implemented to make the CBS in Pettah efficient and he expects the support of employees and trade unions of SLTB for that.

Minister Dr.Gunawardhana and SLTB trade union representatives also joined a special meeting to discuss the demands of workers as requested by representatives of TU.

They pointed out that the driver and conductor of a SLTB bus running from Nugegoda to Homagama Pitipana were attacked by a group of private bus workers as the main incident to this situation. Therefore, representatives requested the Minister to investigate the matter and take immediate action as the employees of SLTB buses engaged in long distance services and other passenger transport services are continuously being attacked and harassed in various places across the country by private bus crews.

Since the law is implemented in the proper way, he will always stand for SLTB and its staff  as the Minister in charge of the subject. Therefore, I request all the staff to work peacefully without taking matters into their own hands. The Minister also pointed out that the necessary steps have been taken to implement a special insurance scheme for the safety and welfare of the employees.
