Royal clinches 10th consecutive Ranil Wijesekera Trophy

In a thrilling and tense final match held at the Royal College Sports Complex on Saturday evening, the Royal College badminton team secured their grip on victory for the tenth consecutive year, triumphing over arch-rivals S Thomas’ College with a close 3-2 score. The event, organized by the Royal College Badminton and Management Committee, marked the 14th annual badminton encounter between the two schools.

The players from the Reid Avenue School showed their dominance across all age groups, claiming titles in Under-13, Under-15, Under-17, and the Ranil Wijesekera Memorial Trophy for the Under-20 category. The final match for the Under-20 category saw the Royalists clinching a thrilling 3-2 victory, showcasing their resilience and determination. The Under-17 title was secured with a commanding 4-1 win, while the younger players displayed their prowess with straightforward 5-0 victories in the Under-15 and Under-13 categories.

The coaching team, led by Head Coach Harsha Hettiarachchi and Assistant Coach Mahesh Padmakumara, played a pivotal role in guiding the team to this remarkable victory. The trophy was presented by Chief Guest Surendra Weerawagu, a former Royal College captain from 1958, who has been actively involved in Sri Lankan Badminton for over six decades.

Under-20 team: Agra Hewage (captain), Aashinsa Herath, Thisul Herath, Manuth Pelawatta, Akinda Damsara, Thishakya Polwattage, Thavindu de Mel, Hansana Perera, Rashmitha Pallewela, Tharin Chandrasekara, Hiran Weerasinghe, Gayuka Gunasekara.

Under-17 team: Menula Chandrasekara (captian), Kovlindu Edirisooriya, Chanul Vihanga Kotapola Arachchi, Lesanda Athsara, Nusara Samarasinghe, Vindiya de Silva, Thushan Nilanga Fernando, Siluna Gunaratne, Mohan Ganatheep.

Under-15 team: Sanoj Galappaththy (captain), Pasan Bonuka, Sasandu Samaraweera, Chenitha Hettiarachchi, Thevin Vithanachchi, Kaveesha Gomes, Thaviru Perera, Hansaka Wijesinghe, Chamiru Rajapaksha, Hirun Thilakarathne.

Under-13 Team: Yasiru Jayawardana, Sithika Resandul, Nikil Wijesinghe, Risith Dissanayake, Dulvan Samaraweera, Rasadu Jayaratne, Shaveen Gamage, Druvin Vitharanage, Aravinthan Abiran, Navindu Samaraweera, Vehan Wijebandara.
