Royal edge out Thomians in annual tennis tie

Royal College edged out their traditional rivals S. Thomas’ College 3-2 in the 18th annual Inter-Schools tennis encounter played at the P. Nagendran Tennis Complex in Reid Avenue.

Royal also retained the E. F. C. Perera Memorial Trophy for another year and further increased their overall tally to 14 wins in the series between the two schools.

However, Royal had a shock start to the game as the Thomians took the initiative with Zaidh Zihar overcoming Jamal Sabry 9-4 in the first Singles tie.

Royal came back strongly and equalised with their Doubles pair of Methvan Wijemanne and Ryan Sugathadasa defeating Wenuka Kithnula and Reshane Dwight 9-5.

The visitors took the lead once again as Aahil Kaleel beat Kavish Maddumage 9-7 in the second Singles before Skipper Nethwin Dharmaratne and Chenul Wickramasinghe made it 2-2 by claiming the second Doubles over Mayank Perera and Navidu Herath 9-0.

Royal then added the finishing touches in style as Thilina Dissanayake rallied around well to defeat Meneshka Ratnasingham 9-4 in the third and deciding Singles match.

Earlier, Royal beat S. Thomas 3-2 in the Under-15 encounter while S. Thomas’ had the satisfaction of winning the Under-13 tie 3-2.
