Royal, Isipathana surge ahead in U-20 Rugby League

Royal College and Isipathana College, despite recording contrasting victories last week, managed to take the lead after the second week of matches in the 2022 Inter-Schools Under-20 ‘A’ Division League Rugby Tournament points table.

The defending champions Royal, who are chasing their fourth successive league title, stormed into the lead in Group-1 following a crushing 53-0 victory against Kingswood College on their home grounds.

Royal also emerged as the most successful team so far, in terms of tries as they have crossed their opponents goal line on 12 occasions, two more than St. Joseph’s College who are on par with 11.00 points.

The Joes also performed well to collect their bonus point for the second successive week despite going through some tough moments during their key fixture against S. Thomas’ College at Havelock Park. Trinity College are trailing by just one point from the Group-1 leaders

after their exciting 25-18 victory over home town rivals St. Anthony’s College at the Nittawela Stadium in Kandy.

Meanwhile, former champions Isipathana built up a good three-point lead from their nearest rivals as they finished on top with 11.00 points in Group-2 of the points table following their 10-0 triumph against Wesley College.

St. Peter’s College occupy the second place in Group-2 despite their shock 7-11 defeat at the hands of Vidyartha College last week at the Nittawela Stadium in Kandy.

The Peterites are closely challenged by Welsey who are trailing by just half a point after their 0-10 defeat at the hands of Isipathana at the Sugathadasa Stadium.

Dharmaraja College and Science College figured in the first draw of the tournament this season but both teams are well behind from challenging the rest of their opponents.
