Royal ‘s rising star Sulaiman Shihar sets new records

Sulaiman Shihar, a Royal College, Colombo swimmer, set two new records at the All Island School Games Swimming Championship concluded at the Sugathadasa Swimming Pool on Monday.

Competing in the Under-14 category, Sulaiman broke records in the 50m backstroke and 100m backstroke events during the three-day competition. On Sunday, the 13-year-old swimmer achieved a time of 31.14 in the 50m backstroke final, surpassing the previous record of 31.39 set by Mihith Ekneligoda from Ananda College last year. In the 100m backstroke on the final day, Sulaiman clocked 1:07.38, erasing the previous record of 1:08.73 set by Vanuja Kannangara from St Joseph’s College in 2018.

Sulaiman also earned a silver medal in the 50m freestyle and a bronze in the 4x50m medley relay, swimming alongside Randira Perera, Devja Jayawardana, and Janek Peiris from Royal College. In the same meet, Shehan Siriwardena, competing in the Under-20 category, secured a gold medal in the 100m butterfly and two silver medals in the 50m butterfly and 200m butterfly. Notably, Siriwardena broke the previous meet record in the 100m butterfly despite winning silver.

Additionally, Dimeethri Liyanage won a bronze medal in the 50m breaststroke for Royal College, with coaching support from swimming legends Kingsley Bandula and Kanitha Munasinghe, who have represented Sri Lanka at the international level.
