Royal-Thomian tennis encounter for Pereira Challenge Trophy

The 15th Annual Inter-School tennis encounter between traditional rivals Royal College and S. Thomas’ College for the E. F. C. Pereira Challenge Trophy will be played on July 2 at Mount Lavinia, commencing at 9.00 a.m.

The Trophy was donated by D. L. Seneviratne (Old Royalist and former President of the SLTA) in memory of E. F. C. Pereira, who was a teacher at Royal for 20 years and thereafter, a teacher at S. Thomas’ for a further 18 years.

In fact, late Pereira was the Teacher-in-Charge of tennis at both schools.

The winner of the Under-19 tie will be awarded the Trophy.

There will also be an Under-15 and Under-13 age group Ties as well. Royal are the holders of the Trophy after having won the 2018 encounter at the same venue.

Each tie will consist of three singles and two doubles matches. As both teams are evenly matched a highly competitive and exciting contest is on the cards.

Royal will be Captained by Ramith Herath and the Vice-Captain will be Abdullaha Azahar. S. Thomas are led by Zahidh Zihar with Wenuka Kithnula as the Deputy Skipper.

The awards distribution to the winners is scheduled to be held on the same day.
