Agriculture and Plantation Industries Minister Mahinda Amaraweera had instructed the Rice Research and Development Institute (RRDI) in Bathalagoda to provide a quality analysis report on the samples of Basmati rice imported to Sri Lanka from 2021 to 2023.

The Minister said that the quality of rice produced in the country is higher than the rice of other countries in the region and he said that he wants a quality analysis report on imported Basmati rice to be done.

Accordingly, 109 samples of Basmati rice imported from India from 2021 to 2023 have been received by Bathalagoda RRDI.

Of these, 68 were acceptable and 41 were rejected for non-compliance.

Also, 214 rice samples imported from Pakistan during that period were tested, of which 121 were acceptable and 93 have been rejected for not being of the proper standard.

Also, 42 rice samples imported from other countries were received by the RRDI during the said period, 14 of which were of suitable quality. It is also stated in the report given to the Minister by the RRDI that 28 samples were rejected. The report also emphasizes that these quality analyses were undertaken by the RRDI to ensure maximum quality of imported Basmati rice.
