Rs.1,000 million will be disbursed among youth to attract them into farming out of the Rs.3,000 million that had been allocated in this year’s budget to the Department of Agricultural Development.
Rs.3,000 million has been allocated and given to the Department of Agricultural Development in the 2024 budget for development activities in 2024.
Agriculture and Plantation Industry Minister Mahinda Amaraweera instructed the Agricultural Development Department to allocate Rs.1,000 million from that amount for programmes that will attract the youth community towards agriculture and farming activities.
One thousand youths will be selected and they will be given one million rupees each and they will be directed towards export oriented farming activities.Four major crops will be prioritized for farming next year, which are paddy, maize, chilli and potatoes.
Minister Amaraweera mentioned that this step is being taken to encourage the youth community to grow these crops as well as to grow crops that are currently in international demand, and especially to create confidence in agriculture for the youth community.
