Cabinet Spokesman, Transport, Highways and Mass Media Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardhana said Rs.10 billion have been allocated for this year’s elections at the Cabinet media conference held at the Government Information Department.

He said this money has been allocated only for the Presidential and Parliamentary Elections to be held in 2024. Also, through a special gazette, amendments for the elections to be submitted by the Commission of Inquiry will not be effective for the elections to be held this year and the elections to be held in 2025.

The Cabinet spokesman said that within the existing limited financial space of the government, the budget estimates for 2024 have allocated Rs.10 billion for conducting the election and the expenses related to the Presidential Election and the General Election have to be managed within that provision.

The Cabinet of Ministers observed that funds for holding the Provincial Council Election and Local Government Election will have to be provided by the budget for 2025 within the existing limited financial space of the Government.

If necessary based on the recommendations to be made by the Commission of Inquiry established under the Commission Act (Authority 393) and published by Special Gazette Notification No.2354/06 dated 16-10-2023, the relevant election laws. The Cabinet of Ministers further took into consideration that the amendments should be introduced with Parliament approval.

The Minister said the Cabinet has decided to give its consent to take the necessary steps based on the facts presented by President Ranil Wickremesinghe.
