Rs. 100 Mn compensation fund for crop damage due to floods

Agriculture and Plantation Industries Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said arrangements are on to begin a compensation programme for crop damage caused in many areas due to flooding. It is estimated that Rs.100 million will needed for this and the Cabinet led by the President has also paid close attention to the payment of crop damage, the Minister said.

The Minister has informed the Agriculture and Plantation Industries Ministry Secretary Janaka Dharmakeerthi to provide an immediate report on all these crop damages.

About 15,000 acres of paddy fields have been destroyed due to floods and heavy rains. Also, many lands where vegetables were cultivated have also been destroyed due to the rain.

The tea cultivation in the Southern province has also been damaged due to this bad weather condition. Due to this situation, the Minister also said that he focused on a compensation programme for crop damage.

The Minister said that due to the destruction of a large amount of land where vegetables were cultivated due to the rain, the price of vegetables may increase in the coming period and emphasised that he had given instructions to the Department of Agricultural Development and the Department of Agricultural Development to take steps to start gardening programmes.
