Urban Development and Housing Minister Prasanna Ranatunge is expecting Rs.15,244.58 million from the government to complete seven housing projects that were launched by Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa as the then Minister of Housing Development during 2015-2019 Good Governance Government, the Ministry said.

These funds will be utilized to complete the construction of 44,053 housing units belonging to these seven projects that have been halted midway due to the lack of funds.

A cabinet paper in this regard will be presented soon and the constructions are expected to be completed by the end of 2024, the Urban Development and Housing Ministry said.

During the 2015-2019 government, the National Housing Development Authority (NHDA) under the purview of then Minister Premadasa has implemented these seven projects which include the model village project (28, 537 units), Visiri Housing Loan project (7,063), Visiri Donation project (1,036), Grama Shakthi project (1,318), Viru Sumithuru Project (53), housing project for Kidney Patients (1, 416) and the housing project for the flood-affected in the North (4,630).

According to the NHDA, those projects have been halted midway as the funds allocated had been used to build housing units exceeding the approved number of units. Minister Ranatunge has decided not to implement any new housing projects until the completion of these seven projects, the Ministry further said.
