Rs. 3 Mn defrauded from overseas job seekers, suspect arrested
The Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) said that a person who had defrauded nearly Rs 3 million from foreign employment seekers, with offers of jobs in Canada, was arrested while in hiding in Kirulapona. Five of the overseas job seekers had responded to an advertisement posted on the internet, offering jobs in Canada, and paid the suspect since 2018. When the suspect started avoiding the clients, they had made a formal complaint to the police. The consequent investigation culminated in the arrest of the suspect.
A senior police officer said that, based on a tipoff to the CCD, the suspect was lured to the Kirulapona area and arrested.
The officer added that it is very likely the suspect has cheated many others in various parts of the country and evaded arrest up to now.
The suspect is to be produced before the court
