The Minister of Agriculture and Plantation Industries, Mr. Mahinda Amaraweera, received Cabinet approval to provide Rs.15,000 per hectare as a financial subsidy for the purchase of fertilizers for paddy cultivation in the 2024 yala season.

Accordingly, it is estimated that Rs. 7500 million will be spent on paddy cultivation in this year’s yala season, and Hon’ble President Mr. Ranil Wickramasinghe has taken steps to provide that amount as the Minister of Finance.

This year, 05 lakh hectares of paddy is to be cultivated in the Yala season. The Commissioner General of Department of Agrarian Development Mr. A.M.H.L. Abeyrathne said that the Department of Agrarian Development took steps to credit the money given for the purchase of fertilizers to the farmers’ accounts.

Thus, as of Friday (07) of last week, the amount of fertilizer subsidy transferred to farmers’ accounts is Rs.4263 million rupees. This money has been credited to the accounts of 383,260 farmers. Currently, the area under paddy cultivation is 284,023 hectares. Accordingly, fertilizer subsidy has been given to 85 percent of the total paddy cultivation area.

However, the government is giving these financial subsidies in the midst of many problems, therefore the Minister of Agriculture and Plantation Industries, Mr. Mahinda Amaraweera, is requesting the farmers to use this money to apply MOP fertilizer, which is essential for paddy cultivation.

If farmers don’t apply MOP fertilizer, there is a possibility that the rice yield will decrease and the paddy cultivation will turn yellowish. Therefore, the minister also mentioned that it is the responsibility of the farmers to apply fertilizer using this money.
