Rs.60 Mn worth of pawned gold robbed from Wennappuwa bank
Thieves broke into the Regional Bank located in Wennappuwa Angampitiya and broke the safe and stole over Rs.60 million worth of pawned gold items.
The theft took place after the bank was closed at 1.45 pm on September 27 and it was discovered that the bank had been broken into when it re-opened at 8.30 am on September 30, according to a complaint made by its manager to the Wennappuwa Police.
Investigation has revealed that this theft was planned targeting the long weekend holidays.
The safe was also cut with a grinder machine.Police found eight worn out blades on the ground. Police believe the thief or thieves most likely used a grinder with rechargeable batteries. Since last year, many post offices across the country had been broken into and money and stamps were stolen in the same way.Police said the safe in this rural bank has 26 chambers and seven chambers have been hacked.
Police say that the thief or thieves fled after carrying out the theft and took away the data recorder of the security camera system of the bank.
