RUSSIA,US, UKRAINE: Russian airborne troops landed in the eastern Ukrainian city of Kharkiv on Wednesday, the Ukrainian army said, adding that there were immediate clashes.
“Russian airborne troops landed in Kharkiv… and attacked a local hospital,” the army said in a statement on messaging app Telegram. “There is an ongoing fight between the invaders and the Ukrainians.”
Kharkiv, a largely Russian-speaking city near the Russian border, has a population of around 1.4 million.
In Kherson on the Black Sea, where officials had on Tuesday reported Russian checkpoints encircling the city, Russian forces took control of the railway station and the port overnight, city mayor Igor Kolykhayev was quoted by local media.
Meanwhile, US President Joe Biden announced on Tuesday night that the US is banning Russian aircraft from its airspace in retaliation for the invasion of Ukraine. Biden made the announcement in his State of the Union speech.
The move follows similar action by Canada and the European Union this week. The ban would come on top of a wide range of sanctions the U.S., Europe and other nations have imposed on Russia that are expected to hammer that nation’s economy.
At least five persons died and five others were wounded on Tuesday after Russian troops attacked the main television tower in the heart of the Ukraine’s capital of Kyiv. The attack potentially disrupted the tower’s signal, said Ukrainian interior ministry adviser Anton Herashchenko.
At least eight people died and six others were wounded in a residential block in Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, in a Russian airstrike on Tuesday.
“As a result of an air strike… eight people were killed and six injured in Kharkiv,” Ukraine’s emergency service was quoted as saying.
