Sailors dominate SLN Open Shooting Championship

Sri Lankan sailors dominated at the 6th Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) Open Shooting Championship-2022 which was held at the Sri Lanka Navy Small-bore Firing Range Complex, Welisara from January 14 to 22. The overall championship of the tournament was won by SLN Musketry Pool with a number of victories secured from team and individual events.

The tournament was represented by Sri Lanka Navy, Army, Air Force, Police, renowned sports clubs as well as marksmen and women from school clubs while SL Army emerged as runner-up.

Women Petty Officer (Communication), MGTUE Egodawela of the Navy won the Best Riffle Shooter award in women’s category for her outstanding performance throughout the tournament. The men’s Best Riffle Shooter title was clinched by Sergeant WAJR Hemachandra from Sri Lanka Army.

Accordingly, Navy marksmen and women made following achievements in the SLN Open Shooting Championship. 10M Air Pistol Team (Men) – Gold Medal, 10M Air Pistol Team (Women) – Gold Medal, 25M Standard Pistol Team (Men) – Gold Medal, 10M Air Pistol Individual (Women) – Silver Medal, 10M Air Rifle Individual (Men) – Bronze Medal, 10M Air Rifle Individual (Women) – Silver Medal, 25M Sport Pistol Individual (Women) – Bronze Medal, 25M Rapid Fire Pistol Individual (Men) – Gold Medal, 25M

Standard Pistol Individual (Men) – Gold Medal, 50M Free Pistol Individual (Men) – Gold Medal, 50M Prone Individual (Men) – Gold Medal, 50M Prone Individual (Men) – Silver Medal, 50M Prone Individual (Men) – Bronze Medal, 50M Prone Individual (Women) –Gold Medal, 50M Prone Individual (Women) – Bronze Medal, 50M Rifle 3×40 Individual (Men) – Silver Medal, 50M Rifle 3×40 Individual (Men) – Bronze Medal, 50M Rifle 3×40 Individual (Women) – Gold Medal and 50M Rifle 3×40 Individual (Men) –Silver Medal.

In addition, 83 marksmen and women representing the School Sports Associations took part in the tournament. Among them N. Sally of St. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia excelled as the Best Junior Shooter in boys category while U.K.D.T. Geethma of Visakha Vidyalaya was adjudged the Best Junior Shooter in girls category. S.B.M.H.K. Bandaranayake of Maliyadeva College, Kurunegala and D.M.N.N.M. Dassanayake of Buddhist Ladies College, Colombo won the Best Young Shooter titles in boys and girls categories respectively. D.M.N.N.M. Dassanayake qualified for the national pool to represent the country at the forthcoming 19th Asian Championship in China as a result of noteworthy feat in the tournament.

The shooting championship was organized by SL Navy in accordance with the existing COVID-19 health guidelines and its prize giving ceremony was held at the Welisara Naval Shooting Complex on January 23 under the patronage of the chief guest, Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral YN Jayaratne. The event was also attended by senior officers of the Navy, Director of Sports of the Navy, Chairman of the Navy Shooting Squadron and a number of sailors.

Further, under the guidance of the Commander of the Navy, Vice Admiral Nishantha Ulugetenna, who serves as the Chairman of the Navy Sports Board for Infrastructure Development in the Navy Sports Field, Naval Athletes were provided with new weapons, equipment and facilities.
