Sajith backs out from NCM against Keheliya
It is reported that the ruling party tried to set a date for the immediate debate of the No-Confidence Motion (NCM) against Health Minister Keheliya Rambukwella during the Committee on Parliamentary Affairs, but Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa backed down and now the situation is that no date has been fixed.
According to reliable sources, the Committee on Parliamentary Affairs had met yesterday (8) under the chairmanship of Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena, where the Leader of the House, Minister Susil Premajayantha had presented the proposal for this.
The Leader of the House had informed the committee that there will be an opportunity to debate the No-Confidence Motion presented by the Opposition against Health Minister Keheliya Rambukwella in Parliament on Thursday and the relevant Minister had also agreed to it.
Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa representing the Samagi Jana Balavegaya Party and the Chief Whip of the Opposition Lakshman Kiriella had stated that there is no urgency to debate the Motion of No Confidence next Thursday.
The Leader of the House had again asked them if they can give a date, even if it is during the coming week. In response, Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa had said that it is important because the problem of Sri Lanka Cricket will be debated in the coming week.
The Speaker, as the Chairman of the Committee on Parliamentary Affairs, had also requested the Leader of the Opposition and his representatives to give them a date in the opening week of September to help complete the matter. But the Opposition Leader and his representatives had not agreed on that and their response had been, “We are not in a hurry”.
Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena, Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, Speaker Susil Premajayanth, Nimal Siripala de Silva, G.L. Peiris, Ranjith Maddumabandara, Vajira Abeywardena, Sagara Kariyawasam, M.A.Sumanthiran, Eran Wickremaratne, Johnston Fernando, Gamini Lokuge, A.L.M. Athaullah participated and sources indicate that the Samagi Jana Balavegaya party, which brought the No-Confidence Motion, hesitated to set a date for debating it, so ultimately no date was set.
However, the No-Confidence Motion brought by the Samagi Jana Balavegaya against Health Minister Keheliya Rambukwella was handed over to the Speaker on July 21, where the General Secretary of the Samagi Jana Balavegaya, Ranjith Maddumabandara, told the media that 45 MPs had signed the No-Confidence Motion. Considering the timeliness of the No-Confidence Motion, the Opposition MPs had mentioned on several occasions that they hoped the Government would take it up for debate soon.
