Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa expressed serious concern over obtaining continuous financial assistance by the Government from foreign countries and said the Government should directly reveal the purpose of obtaining such loans with higher interest rates.
The Opposition Leader made these remarks at a meeting held at Opposition Leader’s Office in Colombo.
Premadasa said he received information that the Government had obtained US dollars one billion from India. He said according to the information he received, this huge sum of US dollars one billion is going to be distributed among 14,000 village level political party members to start ‘Boutiques’ in their respective villages.
“Even the Indian Government inquired from the Samagi Jana Balawegaya also about the reason for obtaining such a big financial loan by the Government,” he said.
The Opposition Leader said he has also received information that this money is going to be distributed among 14,000 their Party members to start so called ‘Village Boutiques’ and accordingly a member receives Rs.800,000 each.
“However we are under the impression that a large percentage of these moneys are going to be allocated by members for political party development activities,” he said.
The Opposition Leader thoroughly opposed this money spending for petty political activities by anybody and requested the Government to refrain from granting such loans to Party members since every single cent belongs to the people in the country and urged authorities to utilise this money for country’s other development purposes and also to grant relief to poor consumers considering the unbearable service charges and the prices of essential goods.
He asked why authorities cannot see the shortage of essential goods and the escalating prices of essential commodity items such as rice, milk powder, wheat flour, sugar and fuel including diesel and also some essential services.
