Former Minister Manusha Nanayakkara said that SJB leader Sajith Premadasa was the only person who deprived them of Ministerial and Member of Parliament positions for joining the government, without congratulating them for rescuing the country and for its recovery. He thanked Sajith Premadasa for having allowed him to carry out a century’s work within two years, in the history of Sri Lanka.

“The people who went to rebuild the country were sued by the SJB because Sajith Premadasa did not want to take the country forward. If he is a man who loves the country, he should thank us for the service rendered to the country. He did not do that.” The former minister said while participating in a press conference held at Battaramulla Waters Edge Hotel yesterday (09).

Former Minister Harin Fernando also participated in this press conference.

The former Ministers said that they bowed to the decision given by the Supreme Court.

Manusha Nanayakkara further said: “At first I remembered how women were being beaten while on their knees, in Bangladesh. University students, people were beaten, people were hanged on the streets, and ministers were hanged, MPs were killed. 420 people lost their lives. We saw how middle-class people were being assaulted and hotels were set on fire. If we did not take the decision to work with Ranil Wickremesinghe, then the same would have happened in Sri Lanka. In fear that that situation would arise in Sri Lanka, and trust Ranil took over the country. We supported him. “When people were facing trouble, it was Harin and I who first took to the streets. It was Harin who first wrote and said, ‘Gota Go Home, Sir’, ‘you cannot’, ‘Sir Fail’. We engaged in the first march to the President’s office against the President. We were asked whether we were crazy to go against the Rajapaksas. But we did so. From there we started. We provided leadership. We played the role of the Opposition. We carried out the task on behalf of the people who voted for the SJB. However, when the country was dying and falling into an abyss, why did we come to parliament, was it to work in the opposition, or to protect people’s lives, or to wait for people to die in queues?

Since that was not possible, we asked Sajith Premadasa to make this decision to prevent the country from going to an illegal State. He did not do so. Harin and I made huge demands, scolded and cried. Then we decided to go with the person who was thinking of going on this journey. Sajith Premadasa said that this cannot be done, that ensuring an economic recovery was an impossible task. When democracy was buried in 52 days, we made decisions because we were not afraid of challenges. It was possible to rebuild the country from where the country collapsed.

When Harin brought dollars in, from the tourism sector, we were able to bring more than 12 billion dollars from foreign jobs to Sri Lanka. They were able to provide people with oil, gas, medicine and electricity using that money. It was because of that that the country’s industries were able to be rebuilt. It was possible to strengthen the entire country’s economy. We did as we believed and showed everyone. We are original UNPers. People like Lalith, Gamini, Ranasinghe Premadasa, and Ranil are there. But not those with genes like Babu who was with Premadasa. Today we are going out without fear having fulfilled the responsibility that we had accepted.

There are countries that have worked for decades rather than centuries. These two years of work will be written in our history. We were able to give that strength to the President. We have fulfilled our duty by creating jobs and building the future without blurring the country’s dreams about jobs.

Former Minister Harin Fernando, who participated in the press conference, thanked the Opposition Leader for allocating a national list slot to him. I was able to do something for the people of this country because of that MP position. We have been given the freedom to work for Ranil Wickremesinghe for 24 hours a day, from today onwards. Sajith did not accept the challenge as the election was coming up and because he was not thinking about the people at that time.

Therefore, I am humbly proud that my ‘mission’ has been completed.
