
Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa has held discussions with Opposition MPs representing the North, East and Up-country areas, focusing on economic and livelihood issues affecting people in the regions and the Opposition’s approach to the upcoming 2027 Budget debate.
The meeting was held at the Office of the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, where MPs briefed Premadasa on the social and economic difficulties faced by communities amid the prevailing economic conditions.
Particular attention was given to household income levels, the rising cost of living and the financial pressures faced by families in the North, East and Up-country areas.
The MPs also discussed shortcomings in basic infrastructure and challenges in the health and education sectors, including access to quality healthcare, issues affecting school education and the nutritional status of children.
Discussions also focused on the Opposition’s role during the 2027 Budget debate. Premadasa said the Opposition expects the upcoming Budget to provide relief to the public by easing the prevailing tax burden.
