Sajith questions Govt. over Ditwah recovery progress amid Rs. 2 trillion estimated losses

Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa today queried the government in Parliament under Standing Order 27(2) regarding the progress made in providing relief and compensation to victims of Cyclone Ditwah, which severely impacted Sri Lanka in November 2025.

Citing official post disaster evaluation data, Premadasa noted that physical damages from the cyclone were estimated at Rs. 618.1 billion, with economic losses reaching Rs. 416 billion.

He added that the cost required for rebuilding in a resilient manner stands at Rs. 1,022.5 billion, bringing the total estimated burden to Rs. 2,056 billion, matching the World Bank’s initial damage estimate of 4.1 billion US dollars.

He requested the government to present the final assessment report alongside updated figures on casualties, missing persons, displaced populations and the number of families eligible for full and partial housing compensation who are yet to receive payments.

Premadasa also demanded a progress update on approved reconstruction schemes, pointing out that Cabinet and Parliament had approved over Rs. 500 billion for recovery, including Rs. 515.46 billion for 1,028 recovery projects and Rs. 102.22 billion for 38 provincial council projects. He called on the government to disclose how much of these funds have been utilised and how many projects are completed. (Newswire)
