“Sajith will follow his father’s footsteps as benefactor of the people”
Former Media Minister and Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP Imthiaz Bakeer Markar yesterday lauded the exemplary service rendered by former President Ranasinghe Premadasa to develop the country’s economy while providing employment to youth in the country’s urban, rural and remote sectors by establishing garment factories throughout the country.
Bakeer Markar said the former President’s son Sajith Premadasa will also follow the footsteps of his late father when he comes into power one day. Addressing the media, Bakeer Markar said the former President not only provided thousands of jobs to youth but also started the ‘Janasaviya’ programme to help the less-privileged.
Bakeer Markar also reminded that the village re-awakening programme ‘Gamudawa’ was also launched by former President Premadasa to develop villages and help villagers to be engaged in self-employment activities.
The former Minister said as there are no such economic development projects in the country at present and the majority of the people are facing severe difficulties due to the escalating prices of day-to-day food items.
“The Government has no alternative plans to earn money other than imposing taxes on the people and as a result, people, especially the youth, have started peaceful demonstrations to urge the Government to reduce the prices of essential foods,” he said.
The SJB MP further reminded how the Government granted colossal tax benefits to certain wealthy individuals when importing sugar and garlic, during the early period of the Government.
Bakeer Markar urged the Government not to impose more taxes on the people at this crucial time in the country.
