Salley’s Release: Order to be made on December 3
The Colombo High Court yesterday fixed the case filed against former Western Province Governor Azath Salley for allegedly making a controversial statement at a press conference that violated inter-ethnic harmony, to deliver its order on December 2 on whether to release Azath Salley without summoning the defence’s witnesses.
When the case was taken up before the Colombo High Court Judge Amal Ranaraja yesterday, the prosecution concluded recording testimonies of the prosecution witnesses.
Following that President’s Counsel Maithri Gunarathne appearing for the accused requested the court to release the accused in accordance with the provisions of the Criminal Procedure Code without summoning the defence witnesses.
Considering the facts, Colombo High Court Judge fixed the case for December 2 to deliver its order whether to release Salley without summoning defence’s witnesses.
The Attorney General had filed indictments against former Western Province Governor Azath Salley in the Colombo High Court for allegedly violating inter-ethnic reconciliation by making a controversial statement at a press conference on March 9, 2021 and inciting sectarian tensions by committing an offense under the Prevention of Terrorism Act and the United Nations Convention on Civil and Political Rights.
