Sand mining permit issued for Kuda Oya Amuna suspended

The Minister of Environment Mahinda Amaraweera yesterday instructed to GSMB to immediately suspend the sand mining permit issued by the Geological Survey and Mines Bureau for the removal of sand from the Kuda Oya Amunat in the Vijayabahupura Division of the Mahaweli B Zone of the Sri Lanka Mahaweli Authority. The Minister states that there have been many public protests regarding the environmental damage around the Kuda Oya Amuna area.
Accordingly, the Geological Survey and Mines Bureau have taken steps to suspend the excavation permit yesterday.
Sajjana Silva, Director General of the Geological Survey and Mines Bureau, said that the license was temporarily revoked due to public protests and submissions made to the Parliament over the special permit issued to for sand mining and the trade license for sand storage.
